Polonnaruwa, a city that rose into prominence in the 12th century, was considered as the capital of medieval Sri Lanka. Here can be seen some remarkable architectural remains, sculptures and murals. The most noteworthy sites of Polonnaruwa are the cluster of Gal Vihara, Thivanka Image House and Alahana Pirivena. Polonnaruwa has been nominated as a World Heritage in 1982.
